Calcium carbide is a powerful and effective chemical-reducing agent and can also be used as energy. In the field of metallurgy, the most obvious way is to reduce the cost. In the process of modern steelmaking, the demand for low-sulfur steel by modern continuous casting and special application increases the attraction of Calcium carbide as a hot metal desulfurizer or slag modifier to improve desulfurization efficiency.

Calcium carbide is converted into acetylene in a controlled reaction with water by a device called a generator. The chemical formula of acetylene is C2H2, which is a very useful hydrocarbon because its energy is locked in the triple bond between carbon atoms. Acetylene cylinders for cutting and welding may be the most common use, but many important chemicals are extracted from acetylene.

Storage and transportation

Stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse. Stay away from fire and heat sources. Keep the relative humidity below 75%. Desulfurizer requires that the package must be sealed and protected from moisture. Should be stored separately from acids, alcohols, etc., and should not be mixed. The storage area should be equipped with suitable materials to contain the leakage.

Emergency treatment and disposal methods

1. Emergency treatment of leakage, isolate the leaked contaminated area and restrict access. Cut off the fire. It is recommended that emergency personnel wear self-contained breathing apparatus and fire protection clothing. Don't touch the leakage directly.

Small amount of leakage: mixed with sand, dry lime, or Soda ash. Collect in a dry, clean and covered container with a spark-free tool. Move to a safe place. A large number of leaks: covered with plastic sheets and canvas to reduce scattering. Contact relevant technical departments to determine the removal method.

2.  The fire extinguishing method prohibits the use of water or foam to extinguish the fire. Carbon dioxide is also ineffective. Must use dry graphite powder or other dry powder (such as dry sand) to put out the fire.
